Ex-SGS Scholar Wayne Sanday has written a thesis on The Greater Suva Urban Area (GSUA) as a Sustainable Urban Community.
He argues that by 2025 the GSUA will be a vibrant flowing urban landscape complete with a light rail transport system. It would have used the inspiration of Curatiba, Brazil and Bogota, Columbia to transform itself from an area built up on the ideas of roading and mobility to one where people, places and harmonious living becomes the guiding principles. It will have become a modern metropolis where green modes and renaturing are encompassed. Pedestrians and cycling will be given prominence. A balanced approach which will be utilised that employs quiet measures to encourage non-motorised and public transport versus harsh measures to discourage automobile use at selected times. The overarching aim will be to replicate the vision of the Mayor of Bogata so that an enviroment is created in the GSUA that promotes ecology friendliness, safety and happinness within a multi cultural society.
