In a notice to all Grammarians dated 8th October, 2015, former President, Ms Jasmine Tam, stated:
“The Association acknowledges the initiative by Mike Gosling and the 60s Grammarians to kick start Project Grammar 2020, 2020 being the year of our Diamond Jubilee.”
Although a special visit was made to Suva Grammar in 2016 by former ex-scholars, including a professional architect, engineer and surveyor, to inspect and report on the state of the school buildings, the proposal to run a campaign among ex-students to fund capital works did not get off the ground, due to the project’s complexity.
Suva Grammar School has a working Old Scholars Association (Grammar Rise Up – GRU) and a PTA. These bodies support Principal with extracurricular activities and academic improvement (extra classes, tuitions).
The Associations have managed to convince the PM’s Office to look into the school’s swimming pool. The PM’s Office has called tenders for scoping and Principal hopes to see another tender called for the renovations.
The school has progressed with a few capital projects such as changing roofs for most classrooms. It will work with the Ministry of Education and PTA/Old Scholars to change roofs for Science Block and carry out major renovations to one of the main teaching block – Year 10.
However, the concern is asbestos in tiles and old panels and Principal is working with Ministry of Education to see how it could be removed.
With the help of some of the old scholars, the School Improvement Team is trying to draw up a plan for an extended library as the current library is too small for a roll of 1000 students.
